Sushi is a staple in Japan and is enjoying a growing popularity within the United States.
Beginning as a method of preserving fish, sushi has become as much an art form as it is a culinary delight. The word “Sushi” to some means raw fish. This is a popular misunderstanding. Sushi actually means “prepared rice”. The rice forms the base for all sushi and is accompanied with fish (sometimes raw), vegetables and sauces to form bit-size pieces that can be eaten with chopsticks or your fingers. Often, sushi patrons dip the sushi creations in soy sauce and/or wasabi (Japanese horseradish).
Sushi can be enjoyed as a cut roll – referred to as Long Roll (“Futomaki”), a cone shaped Hand Roll (“Temaki-zushi”) or as bit sized pieces (“Nigiri-zushi”).
